Pal filmed the first seven movies in the franchise, beginning with Lassie Come Home in 1943. He then appeared briefly in shows, fairs, and rodeos around the United States. In 1954, Pal filmed the two pilots for the television series before retiring. He sired a line of descendants who continued to play the fictional character he originated.
